Agribusiness Management

Offered jointly with the Mary Jean and Frank P. Smeal College of Business, the major in Agribusiness Management prepares you to contribute to the efficient operation of agricultural and food-related firms and agencies.

If you're looking for...

  • a career in management, marketing, or finance
  • work at a firm or agency that supplies the "building blocks" of business--money, credit, labor, machinery, buildings and land
  • the ability to make important business decisions, accurately and fast
  • skills to start and operate your own business
  • strong preparation for law school and a career in business or agricultural law

If any of these sound true, Agribusiness Management might be the major for you!

Agricultural processors, wholesalers, food retailers, farm operators and business owners all must decide how resources will be allocated to meet market demands and operate profitably. They must make decisions quickly and accurately as they strive to improve efficiency, lower costs, and increase profit.

Agribusiness Managers tackle all kinds of questions
Should we produce a diverse mix of products, or specialize in a few select items?
Should we hire more workers, or use money to purchase labor-saving equipment?
Should we expand our facilities to increase production and expand our market?  If so, how will it be financed?
How will we sell our product--and to whom?

You will take courses in agribusiness management, accounting, economics, marketing, finance, management, business law, management information systems, plus a specialization area that you design in collaboration with an academic adviser.

A variety of agribusinesses seek our graduates
You may be hired as management trainees, accountant, buyer, or field representative. You could work for a food processor, wholesaler, or retailer; a marketing and purchasing cooperative; a government agency--even a bank or insurance company

Virtually every part of the agribusiness system needs our expertise.
