Plant Sciences

More than Crops and Soil

From wood and forest products to horticultural and landscaping products, plants are a multi-billion dollar industry.

turfgrass

Our scientists are studying genetics to improve plant traits, using weather data and biology to forecast insect and disease problems, and researching the chemical signals that plants emit to defend against pests. Ag Sciences' faculty members and students are also developing bio-based resources that promise novel uses for wood and other plant materials, including fuel and lubricants.

Ag Sciences' turfgrass education and research program is one of the largest and most prestigious programs in the nation.

Students work to maximize safety and playability of athletic fields and undertake research to ensure the physical and economic stability of turf in all applications, from the front yard to Camden Yards.
